With the ever-present risk of fire in commercial buildings, and the importance of complying with fire safety legislation, protecting your business premises and your employees from the prospect of fire is paramount.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – or RRO for short – was made under the Regulatory Reform Act 2001. It replaced most fire safety legislation with one simple order, and one set of legislation to comply with.
The RRO details that any person who has some level of control in premises must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire, and make sure people can safely escape if a fire occurs.
You could be fined or go to prison if you don’t follow fire safety regulations. Minor penalties can be up to £5,000. Major penalties have unlimited fines and up to 2 years in prison.
The RRO order applies to virtually all business premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space.
